· What strategies did the teacher use to instruct learners during the class?

  • The teacher greeted the students

  • The teacher then took the roll

  • Didactic teaching approach - instructions of continuing classroom based assessment embroidery project

  • Teacher has great relationships with students

Classroom management


· What were the classroom policies? (Consider seating arrangements, bathroom breaks, roll calls)

  • Assigned seats

  • roll call first thing

  • students have to ask permission to use the toilet

  • students desk facing wall

  • health and safety in relation to embroidery


· Consider how interest was gained, rules and routines established, how was student’s attention ascertained?

  • conversation after roll call - how many classes are left in the cba to get the embroidery finished

  • checking the work done so far - answering students questions in relation to their work

  • projecting voice

  • telling students to pay attention, calling the students name

  • showing examples from other years


· How did the teacher maintain appropriate classroom behaviour?

  • students were too engaged in the task - no behaviour problems

  • one corner (4 girls) were talking away however the teacher didn't mind as the work was evident


· How did teachers deal with indiscipline or disruptions during the class?

  • none, there were no behaviour problems

  • when the class was loud she put her hand up and the students were quiet when they saw the hand being up

Presentation of learning content


· How did the teacher introduce the lesson?

  • informing the class what they are doing today

  • reminding what they will do for the rest of the week - writing it down in journal

  • the students were ready with their work before the teacher came in


· What teaching methods did the teacher employ?

  • one on one with the students

  • questioning

  • evaluation - presentation of work


· How many different teaching episodes/activities /tasks were in the class?

  • one on one with students

  • students activities - embroidering away at their own pace

  • evaluation


· How was the class concluded?

  • selected students went up to show and talk about their work

  • 5 min before end of class students were asked to clean up their area - throwing away scraps of fabric or thread

  • packing up their stuff and being dismissed by the teacher


· What resources were used during the class?

  • visual aids

  • old students work

  • numeracy and oracy were present in class

  • measuring of thread - 3 times arm length

  • oracy - discussion and talking about work

  • shape, colour, line

  • recycling and sustainable fashion

  • students were able to show a number of different stitches

  • students were able to do a step by step of different stitches - explain to a friend

  • through students presentation

  • evaluated from the one on one to see how far they are since the last class

  • No clear differentiation however this was mid project and each student is working at their own pace

  • questioning

  • discussion - presentation took place at the end


Any additional comments on what you learned from the observation class?


I need to be slightly more strict, This way I will get more work done in a single class. This also shows that the students wouldn't be messing in the class, it is clear that the students know that teachers' class rules and they follow those rules.
