· What strategies did the teacher use to instruct learners during the class?

  • The teacher greeted the students and asked them to take out their homework

  • The teacher then took the roll

  • students read over their homework while the roll was being taken

  • The teacher introduced the topic for today's class


· What personal characteristics did the teacher display?

  • Teacher has great relationships with students

  • Positivity

Classroom management


· What were the classroom policies? (Consider seating arrangements, bathroom breaks, roll calls)

  • roll call first thing

  • students can ask teacher for permission to use the toilet

  • u shaped table


· Consider how interest was gained, rules and routines established, how was student’s attention ascertained?

  • conversation after roll call - small recap from previous class

  • checking homework - questions about any work that they didn't understand

  • projecting voice

  • conversation with the students to get them used to talking in english


· How did the teacher maintain appropriate classroom behaviour?

  • Keeping students very busy allowed for little time for misbehaviour

  • class was also very small which helped with the behaviour


· How did teachers deal with indiscipline or disruptions during the class?

  • none, there were no behaviour problems small class

· How did the teacher introduce the lesson?

  • powerpoint was presented - breakdown of the content

  • class discussion - cognitive link up

  • looking at fixing sentences grammatical errors based on the Irish culture


· What teaching methods did the teacher employ?

  • teacher reading out the text and allowing students to complete task

  • correcting work together - questioning - why did you do this or use this

  • think pair and share

  • teacher going through ppt

  • students asking questions

  • solving 3 questions x4 activities

  • discussion - their culture compared to Irish culture

  • all work was corrected

  • teacher allowed the girls to pack up slowly

  • gave a hand out to practice and read it over the weekend

  • thanked the class and dismissed them

  • literacy, and oracy were present in class

  • solving the questions - huge focus on grammar and the tenses

  • none - not an art class

  • strong use of culture - focus on irish culture and traditions

  • students were able to solve the grammatical errors

  • were the questions answered correctly

  • when a student was struggling/ confused the teacher went over the problem as a group - she knew if one was struggling the other two girls may need clarity too

Any additional comments on what you learned from the observation class?


It was a nice class to observe, it must be nice for the teacher to have a small class as it allows the teacher to focus on the tasks with the girl and she can give them here full attention . It shows how important it is to differentiate and have handouts for the girls that dont have english as their first language
